What are Ganglion Cysts, and are they Serious?

ganglion cystGanglion cysts are lumps that normally form in the feet and ankles, along tendons and joints. Even though they are noncancerous, they can cause substantial pain if not treated. Here is some information on this condition and different treatment options.

What causes Ganglion Cysts?

There are several contributing factors to the formation of ganglion cysts. Although cysts can be as small as the size of a pea, they can cause a great deal of pain when they press on a nerve. In addition, if a cyst is in the wrong location it can restrict joint movement.

If the ball of the foot undergoes stress or friction, or if you wear the wrong type of shoes, cysts can occur. In addition, people who wear shoes with no socks are prone to developing cysts. If you have hammertoe or bunions, you may also be at risk.

Common symptoms include pain and redness under the skin, a visible bump or raised nodule, and dry skin. Some people also notice hard skin around areas of the foot that typically undergo a great deal of pressure.

How are Ganglion Cysts treated?

A Rowlett foot specialist with Casteel Foot & Ankle can provide you with a wide range of treatment options for patients who have ganglion cysts. Non-surgical options include wearing the proper shoes, using padding to reduce pressure and using inserts and supports. Your doctor may also prescribe pain medication as well as orthotics.

However, if the cyst does not go away – either on its own or through the use of non-surgical approaches – then surgery may be needed to either drain the cyst or remove it completely.
