Ankle Sprain Symptoms
An ankle sprain is a painful ankle injury. Most people have twisted an ankle while walking or running in their daily routines, or while doing athletic activities. In most cases, they can “walk off” the ankle pain when it is not too serious. An ankle sprain is a more serious injury than a twisted ankle. A sprained ankle results when the foot is planted and weight is shifted suddenly, rolling the ankle inward as the foot turns outward. This motion damages ligaments inside the ankle.
If the ankle becomes swollen and painful throughout, it is most likely a sprained ankle. Pain is felt right away, in most cases, when the sprain occurs. The ankle will become swollen, tender to the touch, painful to move, and bruising will set in. You may not be able to walk or place any weight on the ankle.
Ankle Sprain Treatments
Ankle sprain treatments depend on the severity of the injury and the amount of ankle pain. In most cases, your ankle doctor will order X-rays to determine if there is a broken bone or other injury to the ankle or foot. Most ankle sprains are treated with:
- Protective brace
- Crutches to keep weight off the injury
- Rest
- Cold packs
- OTC medicines for pain and swelling
- Compression bandage
- Elevation
Rehabilitation may also be needed to ensure proper healing for the ankle. Exercises may be recommended to keep the ankle strengthened.
