A neuroma refers to the thickening of nerve tissue, which can occur throughout the body. Morton’s neuroma, which occurs between the third and fourth toe, is the most common neuroma in the feet. Some of the symptoms of Morton’s neuroma include pain, numbness, tingling, and burning. Patients may also feel as if there is something within the ball of the foot. There are surgical and non-surgical treatment options for this condition.
Non-Surgical Treatments
A foot and ankle physician or surgeon can help patients develop a treatment plan that doesn’t involve surgery. Treatment will depend on the severity and how long the patient has suffered from the condition.
Non-surgical treatment options for mild to moderate neuromas include:
- Padding – Patients can use padding to support the metatarsal arch of the foot. This support decreases the pressure and compression inflicted on the nerve.
- Icing – An icepack will reduce swelling on the affected area.
- Activity modifications – Patients should avoid activities that put excessive pressure on the neuroma.
- Orthotic devices – A custom orthotic device can provide additional support to the foot to reduce compression and pressure on the affected nerve.
- Shoe modifications – Patients should wear footwear with a wide toe box. Narrow-toed shoes and high heels should be avoided.
- Medications – Patients can take oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Injection therapy – Patients can undergo injections of local anesthetics, cortisone, and other agents.
Surgical Treatments
Surgery is usually the treatment of choice for severe neuromas. If non-surgical treatments aren’t providing sufficient relief from the pain and inflammation, patients should consider surgery. The duration of the recovery period will depend on the severity of the condition and the procedure performed. Even after surgery, your surgeon will recommend that you continue non-surgical treatments to prevent the reoccurrence of the neuroma.
