Plantar warts typically occur on the sole of the foot due to the human papillomavirus. This virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin such as a small cut, and can be transferred to another person either indirectly or through direct contact. Here is some information on the symptoms of this problem as well as how it is treated.
Symptoms
One of the most common symptoms of plantar warts is a small, rough growth on the bottom of the foot. If the wart has grown inward, you may notice a callus forming over a certain spot on the skin. You may also see tiny, black dots.
These are known as “wart seeds,” but they are small blood vessels that have clotted. Some people have a lesion that interrupts the normal appearance of ridges and lines on the skin of the foot and also experience tenderness or pain when they stand or walk.
If you have tried over-the-counter medications to treat the wart but it either does not go away or it multiplies, or if it is painful or changes appearance, you should see a podiatrist. You should also visit a doctor if your immune system has been compromised or you have diabetes. There are instances where this type of wart will need to be removed surgically or through the use of a laser.
Prevention
There are some things you can do to lower the chances of developing plantar warts. For example, avoid sharing socks, shoes, towels or razors with anyone else, and also keep your feet dry. If you are using a public pool area, a locker room or a shower, always wear shower shoes. You should also try to avoid irritating the soles of your feet, because the broken skin will help a wart grow more easily.
