Ganglion cysts are a particularly troublesome condition to deal with, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a variety of treatments designed specifically to return your wrist back to its natural state. In this post we’re going to look at what exactly ganglion cysts are, get at some of the causes of these pesky things, and show you how you can go about treating them.
What are ganglion cysts?
A ganglion cyst is a cyst that originates in a joint. It uses this joint as a sort of stalk and rises above from it like a balloon. The way it grows is outside of tissues that surround the joint, and then gets filled with a fluid that’s actually a lot like the fluid you’ll find between your joints. Ganglion cysts are most commonly found in the wrists, and can develop on the top or bottom of them.
What causes ganglion cysts?
While it’s not known exactly what causes them, we do know that they’re most common in people aged 15-40, and they’re more common in women than women. As you would expect, these cysts are especially common in gymnasts. When they do form, they appear as a very visible lump, so there will be no question that you have a ganglion cyst when you have one.
How do you treat ganglion cysts?
These cysts sometimes disappear on their own, but when they don’t, a brace will commonly be used to reduce their size. If these methods don’t work, your doctor will either remove the fluid or perform surgery. For more information or to schedule an appointment call Casteel Foot & Ankle Center at (972) 412-4449.
